Alassane Ouattara calls for Ivorian cocoa export ban

The internationally recognised president of Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara, is calling for all cocoa exports to be suspended from today.

It is the latest move to mount pressure on incumbent president, Laurent Gbagbo.

Mr Gbagbo is refusing to step down, but at the weekend he lost control of the state accounts when a key ally, the governor of the West African central bank, resigned.

Ivory Coast is the world's biggest cocoa exporter and cocoa taxes are vital for helping to pay civil servant salaries.
